Essential Oils & Teas for Mental Health

Here is a list of relaxing plants or blends that can be found in teas:

• Lavender

• “Sleepytime Tea”, “Mothers Little Helper” by Davids Tea

• Valerian root

• Passionflower

On occasion we may experience nausea secondary to anxiety or medications. Ginger may help to alleviate nausea or even if taken in the night, alleviate morning nausea which may occur with anxiety.

• Ginger tea may by steeping cut up fresh ginger, or using a pre-made tea bag

• Ginger capsules by a reputable Nutraceutical brand, by asking at your favorite natural health store

Massage with products that have essential oils alone or in combination:

• 2 drops each of Peppermint and Lavender essential oils and if wish 1-2 drop of rosemary may address muscle discomfort). Can be put into 1-2 tsp of a carrier oil such as jojoba oil , sweet almond oil or coconut oil use for massage.

Using a diffuser with essential oils can help induce sleep and relaxation:

• Lavender can be used in a diffuser or can be applied directly to skin or sprayed onto sheets.

• Frankincense can be used in a diffuser or can be applied directly to skin or sprayed onto sheets.

Baths and essential oils

• Suggestions to adding your favourite essential oils to your bath may include 3-6 drops of relaxing lavender, rose, chamomile, geranium or bergamot to 1/4 cup of epsom salts to help disperse the oil in water, or 2-3 drops of eucalyptus to the bath which can help clear nasal passages. Oils may also be added directly to the bath water.

• Inhaling essential oils can stimulate the limbic system in our brain which is an area that can be involved in controlling emotions and long-term memories as well as our sense of smell.
