ADHD (+ Parenting Strategies)

To review my other “Parenting” tips, be sure to check out my original post on the topic.

Below are some tips for parenting a child/teen with ADHD symptoms :

  • When speaking to your child or teen, use short sentences using straight-forward words. Make your comments, suggestions, requests or questions, in the simplest language, without raising your voice, because it’s the better chance you have of your child or teen hearing what you have to say.

  • Have clear rules and expectations within the home. It is important to have consistent parenting and regular communication between caregivers.

  • Avoid direct confrontation. Don’t go on the defensive. Use a calm tone of voice voice and simple clear language.

  • Choose the right time when you want to ask a question, make a comment, suggestion or a request. If they are too stimulated or upset, you will be less likely to be heard.

  • Know when to back off, and give time for the adolescent to cool down. Arrange as well for alone space and quiet time.

  • Feed first: a hungry, tired teen with low blood sugar may be more irritable and less likely to listen. That includes the hung-over or not sober teen.

  • Show respect even if you are not receiving it, always take the opportunity to be a role model.

  • Be firm and straightforward.

  • Consequences of possible undesired behavior are best discussed with your child or adolescent ahead of time to deal with, before possible situations arise. They may include timeouts, or removal of privileges for short periods of time. The consequences should be within reason for the age of the child or teen, and are better if short in duration, otherwise they can become meaningless.

  • Follow through with consequences, or you run the risk of losing respect and credibility.

  • Aim for short comments providing positive reinforcement and acknowledgment when possible, no matter how small the positive behavior, even if they reject it.
